Avengers play Bottom of the Hill, a former Blair Witch star dishes about the marijuana industry at the Booksmith, and video artists from eight different international cities showcase their work at YBCA.
SFist Tonight, 1/26: 'Blair Witch Project' Actress Turned Pot Grower
Video: Boy Cries Because 49ers Won't Play In Super Bowl
SFist's Daisy Barringer has stiff competition in the mourning game after little Johnny here shed tears of sorrow and confusion after the 49ers lost Sunday's NFC Championship game to New York. Is this a ploy by the kid's dad to get free tickets next season? We hope so. It's a wonderful plan and a perfect execution. (Except for the camera angle. Use horizontal when shooting video on your phone, folks!)
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Zip Line Bulldog Might Be Cutest Thing Ever
SFist contributor Jerry James Stone brings us this eeee!-inducing clip of a bulldog riding a zip line in Costa Rica. Youtube user Garzilly, who shot the video, explains: "I filmed this in June 2010 during our honeymoon stay at Finca Bellavista; a tree-house community located in the southern zone of Costa Rica. Kimbo Slice is the resident bulldog and loves to zipline around the skytrail, a network of zipline trails around the property. Craziest thing I've seen in quite some time."
Video: Occupy Oakland's Scott Olsen On MSNBC, USA Today
Quickly on the road to full recovery, Scott Olsen, the ex retired marine and Iraq War veteran who was critically injured by a police projectile during an Occupy Oakland raid back in October, spoke to MSNBC and USA today earlier this week. He's regained his voice since he made his first statement a couple of weeks back, but speaking is still a challenge for him.
Shirtless Bruce Lee Look-alike Rapping On BART [Video]
Well, this is fun. Muni Diaries brings our attention to a Bruce Lee look-alike caught rapping freestyle whilst riding a BART train the other day. Also, he has no shirt on thus showing off an admittedly taut and lovely body. Delightful.
UC Davis Follow-Up: Chancellor's Eerily Silent Walk of Shame [Video], Faculty Member's Open Letter
As the Second Alarm reports [via BoingBoing], a large crowd of student protesters and their supporters interrupted a press conference on Saturday afternoon with UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi and campus police, demanding a response regarding Friday's brutal pepper spraying incident, along with her resignation. Initially, Katehi refused to leave the building, allegedly intending to give the press the impression that the crowd was trapping her inside.
Video: Cat on Adderall
Let's start off by stating the obvious: you should never drug your pets. Seriously, don't. It's mean, it could harm or kill your little best buddy, and you could wind up in the lower rungs of Hell for living such a cruel life. That said, this video showing a cat high on Adderall (an ADHD drug) is zany in a sad, poor-little-fella way.
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Ricky Gervais and Liam Neeson Do Improv
Ricky Gervais’s new sitcom Life’s Too Short debuted in the UK TV this week. We hope it's as good as his other work. This piece in particular, featuring Gervais, Stephen Merchant (fellow Office creator), and Liam Nesson do some improvisational comedy that, more or less, doesn't go over too well.
Occupy U.C. Berkeley on Colbert Report
Wise man Stephen Colbert took on Occupy Berkeley's skirmish with abusive police this week. Calling UC Berkeley a "hippie haven" and a "slow food, locavore, patchouli, super-fun granola dump site," Colbert breaks down the now-famous video of students and faculty clashing with the fuzz on November 9.
Couple Visiting S.F. Create 'Full House' Intro Parody Video
We don't know who the Kaplans are, but we sure do like their style. Lauren and Michael Kaplan used edited footage from a recent trip to San Francisco to re-creating the intro to Full House, the greatest Friday night sitcom in ABC history. While it starts off with an eyebrow-cocking "San Fran" (forgive them for they know not what they do, commenters), the entire thing is delightful, humorous and well-produced.
Video: Police Beat UC Berkeley Students at Occupy Cal Rally [UPDATED]
During a budding Occupy Berkeley demonstration Wednesday at the UC Berkeley campus, police charged at a group of protesting students before retreating. As the cops attacked the kids, the group chanted, "Stop beating students! Stop beating students!" In the video, you can see a few young men and women getting pounded in the stomaches with police batons.
Sassy Guy in Elmo Shirt Goes Off on KRON's 'Lazy, Fatass' Stanley Roberts
Sing-song voiced Stanley Roberts met his match recently during a segment for KRON 4's addictive People Behaving Badly. Filming law enforcement ticketing titularly bad drivers, one sassy law breaker sporting an Elmo t-shirt goes off on Roberts, calling him a "fat, lazy, non-relevant, non-factor ass." Among other things. He also threatens to break the camera and suggests "1-800-GET-THIN, cubby butt."
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: A 2000 Foot Long Hot Wheels Race Track
This is like the Hot Wheels Race Track we had as a kid, only not nearly as long or rad, and it doesn't jump off the track every five seconds. O the envy, it burns! The "Mother of All Hot Wheels Tracks" here is a 2000 foot long Hot Wheels track that races through a suburban home, a sidewalk, and around a pool.
Jon Stewart On City's Response to Occupy Oakland
"What the fuck happened in Oakland?" Jon Stewart asked during last night's Daily Show. "Seems a little heavy handed... unless some of the protesters were Godzilla," he went on to quip. The comedian took on the city of Oakland's brutal response to Occupy Oakland, which included, among other tactics, using flashbang grenades, rubber bullets, and tear gas. (Most notably, Iraq veteran Scott Olsen was seriously injured during the attack.)
Oakland Police Fling Flashbang Grenade Into Crowd Helping Ailing Man [Video]
As a woman man lies crumpled on the ground after a beanbag assault by Oakland police during last night's scuffle between the city of Oakland and Occupy Oakland, several bystanders and protesters came to her his aid. That was when an officer decided to fling what appears to be a flashbang stun grenade into the group.
Apple Posts Entire Steve Jobs Memorial Online
Filmed on October 19 at the Cupertino headquarters, Apple posted the entire Steve Jobs memorial on their site. It's available on Safari, so if you're using Chrome (like any rational, clear-thinking person) or Firefox, you can't view it just yet. However, if you're on a Mac, go to your "recent items" and click on the oft-ignored Safari icon to see Al Gore and Tim Cook talk about the fallen Apple visionary. You can also watch Gwyneth Platrow's husband's band perform a song in honor of Steve Jobs, among other notables moments.
SFist Tonight, 10/19: The Fine Art of Poisoning, HIV Community Mayoral Candidates Forum, ATA Film & Video Fest
CABARET: The Conservatory of Flowers presents The Fine Art of Poisoning, a night inspired by San Francisco's "femme fatale for the thinking man" Jill Tracy. "Vacked by members of her Malcontent Orchestra, she will weave a web of cautionary tales, lusty murderous obsessions, and shadowy stories of secretly-served revenge," amidst the spooky backdrop of the Conservatory's poisonous plants. (6 to 10 p.m., Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park, 100 John F. Kennedy Drive)
49ers to Make 'It Gets Better' Video?
Now that the 49ers have made a Gloria Swanson-like comeback, hordes of folks have Ped Egg'd their crusty feet in order to jump on the bandwagon. Take, for example, the gays. Many have now urged the local NFL team to create an 'It Gets Better' video for anti-gay bullying efforts. Sean Chapin, a native San Franciscan and lifelong 49ers fan, jumpstarted the petitioned. (Chapin, if you recall, got the Giants to release an "It Gets Better" earlier this year, which sparked seven more Major League Baseball teams to follow suit.)
Video: Herman Cain Sings Song About Pizza
Republican presidential candidate and former Godfather's Pizza CO Herman Cain made headlines last week after becoming the GOP frontrunner for 2012. At last according to a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, anyway. Now he's making headlines for an even more critical issue: this video in which he croons an ode to pizza. Think of a Weird Al Yankovich parody of John Lennon's "Imagine"... only a thousand times better. Also, his voice? Not half bad. Check it out:
Tomorrow Night: Adam Pendleton And Deerhoof's 'BAND'
SFMOMA's popular Now Playing Series kicks off tomorrow night with BAND, a collaboration between New York-based artist Adam Pendleton and quirky local/national gems, Deerhoof, which is described as "an unfolding artwork that re-imagines Jean-Luc Godard's film, Sympathy for the Devil."
Watch Pablo Sandoval Talk To His Bat
Because comedic bits and facial hair proved more important this year than making it to the postseason -- yes, that's it, allow the bitterness to warm you like a Red Cross blanket -- the San Francisco Giants unveiled another bit of hilarity during Monday's game against San Diego (7-2). After hitting two home runs, Pablo Sandoval and his bat had a heart to heart in the dugout. We have no idea what he's saying, but we're glad the two maintain such a close relationship. See for yourself:
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Terry Gilliam's Do It Yourself Animation Show
Monty Python animator and noted film director Terry Gilliam (Brazil, 12 Monkeys) discusses his animation techniques on Bob Godfrey's Do-It-Yourself Animation Show in 1974. According to Cartoon Brew: "Godfrey’s show, which made animation accessible to the masses by taking the mystery out of the production process, was vastly influential and inspired an entire generation of kids in England, including Nick Park, who created Wallace & Gromit, Jan Pinkava, who directed the Pixar short Geri's Game, and Richard Bazley, an animator on Pocahontas, Hercules, and The Iron Giant."
Afternoon Bike Lane Cleanser: Lithuanian Mayor Flattens Parking Violators With a Tank [Video]
In Vilnius, Lithuania, the Mayor has a unique way of dealing with folks who think driving a luxury vehicle gives them carte blanche to park in the city's bike lanes: Rather than dropping another paltry ticket on a too-rich-to-care Mercedes owner, Mayor Zuokas simply ran over the car with an armored personnel carrier. All before scooting off on his own bicycle. Extreme? Yes. Satisfying? Absolutely.
Weekend Palate Cleanser: "Hit and Run Hula at 38,000 Feet"
San Francisco's beloved hula school, Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu, who captivated hundreds of locals a couple of years back during their Hit and Run Hula flash mob throughout the city, including the Apple store, were at it again earlier this month. They took to the skies via a Hawaiian Airlines flight from SF to Honolulu and surprised their fellow passengers mid-flight.
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: 'Can't Keep Johnny Down' by They Might Be Giants
The guys who wrote the Malcolm in the Middle theme song, or whatever have a new song out. It's called "Can't Keep Johnny Down" from their upcoming album Join Us. Also, it's animated. Fun!
SFist Tonight, 7/13: 'Bill Cunningham New York,' David Bazan, Wet Hot American BoozeTube
FILM: Bill Cunningham New York explores the life of "80+ Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist," Bill Cunningham, who's spent decades "obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion trends and high society charity soirées for the New York Times Style section," and "whose only wealth is his own humanity and unassuming grace." (7 and 9 p.m., Castro Theatre, 429 Castro Street)

Facebook Video Chat Feature Unveiled
Powered by Skype, Facebook announced a new video chat feature today. Which will be of interest to those of you who chat on Facebook, or to those of you who don't already use GMail's nifty video chat feature. So, what is it exactly? TechCrunch explains: "It’s a feature that’s been rumored for quite a while, and it’s one that Facebook is putting a lot of weight behind. Now, whenever you browse to a friend’s profile, you’ll see a new button nestled between the ‘Message’ and ‘Poke’ buttons that says ‘Call’. Click that, the other user will see a popup asking if they want to accept a call, and you’ll be immediately connected (you’ll need to install a small plugin the first time you use the service)."
POV: Wide-Angle Camera Mounted on Firework
Instead of a barrage of sunburst-firework videos for your viewing pleasure, this year we bring you Jeremiah Warren's clever ode to Independence Day. Strapping a wide-angle camera to bottle rockets (or something explosive and dangerous like that), Warren captured footage from the illegal fireworks' point of view. It's a bit dizzying but still sorta satisfying. Enjoy.
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: San Francisco in Flight
Shot earlier this month by cameramen Mark Sandhoff and Chad Janusch using two wing-mounted and two in-cockpit HD cameras, San Francisco in Flight's high definition (and sunny!) flyover of the City by the Bay ought to cure your rainy-in-June blues. [Hat tip to SFEgoist]
