SFist is beginning a new series in which Bay Area natives and long-time residents can share their stories from bygone eras. Our inaugural story comes from Bev DeBeaumont Warnecke, who worked at Baruh Wholesale Liquors in the late '50s, a job that gained her a unique view into the social lives of elite Bay Area business owners. Oakland Occupier Renounces Occupy, Blames Melee On Outsiders

Oakland Occupier Renounces Occupy, Blames Melee On Outsiders

We just came across an interesting editorial regarding last weekend's Occupy Oakland kerfuffle in which a stalwart member of the bandwagon expresses distaste for the lack of strategy and general stupidity of what happened, and renounces the local movement altogether. She blames "misdirected anger ... the lack of long term strategy, and it's the justification of violence and the idea that a group of mostly out-of-towners can force their will on a community." more ›

Mark Davis' Hair Emergency Trumps Possible Raiders Return To LA

Mark Davis' Hair Emergency Trumps Possible Raiders Return To LA

We came to write a piece on the Oakland Raiders possibly moving back to Los Angeles. We stayed to gaze in shock and awe at Mark Davis' hair. Because that there is a... very special hairdo, Mark. Who did that to you? Why did they do that to you? Horrifying. And, are you a redhead? We sure hope not. Your fellow gingers do not need that kind of representation polluting the AP Photo stream. Still, your hair color is quite lovely and you have piles of money in the bank. One quick call to Elevations, Grasshopper Hair Salon, or—shudder—even Fantastic Sam's should prettify your mutant mane in no time. You're welcome. more ›

He also garnered unfavorable criticism "after the team led the league in penalties and penalty yards." more ›

'New York Times' Names Oakland Number-Five Place To Visit In 2012

Don't get us wrong: We hella love Oakland, in all its urban, slightly dangerous, Brooklyn-in-the-90s sort of glory. But excuse us if we chuckle a little finding it on a list of places around the world to visit this year, sandwiched between London and Tokyo, in today's New York Times. They cite the three-year-old Fox Theater and the burgeoning food and bar scene — specifically Commis, Hawker Fare, and Daniel Patterson's Plum, Plum Bar, and Haven — as signs that Oakland is finally coming into its own, at least in the eyes of NYT-reading tourists. more ›

And just like that, a smattering of Occupy Oakland protesters have returned to Frank Ogawa. But this time they've taken to the trees. OakFoSho has recorded footage he shot live at the scene during the early morning tree climb. Prior to this morning's stuny tree-sitters resided in the trees at the plaza for about a month. However, according to Oakland Tribune, "Police said the structure was deemed to be illegal lodging and that human waste had been found under the tree." more ›

Police Sweep Out Nascent Occupy Oakland Encampment

Just as soon as it came—on Tuesday, to be exact—last night police evicted residents of the new Occupy Oakland encampment on the 2000 block of Peralta Street near Mandela Parkway. Set up in an empty lot, occupiers claim the space has been vacant for years, which they thought gave them the right to camp there. No so. This prompted the landowner to file a complaint with the city. Oakland police moved in a little after 5 p.m. on Wednesday to clear out protesters. more ›

Local Astrologist Predicts Bad Vibes For Mayor Quan's Post-Occupy Career

Occupiers, political pundits, twitter humorists and TV talking heads have all been speculating on what the post-Occupy future holds for embattled Oakland mayor Jean Quan. While the general consensus seems to be "she blew it", there are some (goddess bless them) who seek a higher, cosmic purpose to their political analysis. Enter Oakland astrologist Djenne Ba, who has gone ahead and peered in to Quan's future by lining it up with like, stars and planets and elements and whatever. According to those celestial bodies, the bad stigma of this whole Occupy Oakland thing is going to follow Mayor Quan around for long time coming. It's all right here in the astrology charts, Oakland Local reports: more ›

Now we get word that several arrests have been made in the murder of the man identified as 25-year-old Kayode Ola Foster of Oakland. Blue Collar Furious Over Occupy's Port Of Oakland Closure?

Blue Collar Furious Over Occupy's Port Of Oakland Closure?

It's no great shock that blue-collar workers falling outside the esteemed food service industry are as despised by the right as they are they left. They're poor. They lack iconic ¡todos somos! credibility. And who wants to be poor and uncool? Not you. No matter how much Tecate or PBR you loudly consume. And both left and right bellyachers seem to know what's best for... them. Take, for example, Monday's temperate Port of Oakland closure by the Occupy Oakland sect. Although the Occupy movement said that the West Coast closures were an attempt to draw focus on "continued union-busting and attacks on organized labor," several noted union teams reportedly did not approve the shutdown beforehand. Neither the Teamster's union nor the International Longshore and Warehouse Union cleared the strike, or so says the Mercury News. more ›

Aquapy Lake Merritt Underway

Aquapy Lake Merritt Underway

A small yet jovial splinter group from the Occupy movement emerged in the glacial waters of Lake Merritt over the weekend. Calling themselves Aquapy Lake Merritt, the group built a large raft, armed it with supplies, and anchored in the middle of the small Oakland lake. They raised a pink and black banner declaring themselves and today's Port of Oakland closure. With shocking clarity, participant Colin Dodsworth, 28, explained to Oakland North the reason for the floaty protest, saying, "People have gotten really apathetic and turned off by typical protests...it's important to do creative, exciting things that will get people talking." more ›
