Stephen Colbert's "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow" independent expenditure committee has been raising funds to support the comedian's real/parody run for the presidency since last fall. As is required by the Federal Election Committee, Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow is required to disclose its donor list, which it did just before the midnight deadline last night. Among the itemized receipts, which total $1,023,121.24 in donations for the Super PAC, a tipster spotted a familiar name — former mayor of San Francisco and current Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom:

Gavin Newsom: Kentfield, California Homeowner
Gavin Newsom has finally found a quaint new suburban home to call his own, the Chronicle's Leah Garchik reports today. The new house, in the overwhelmingly caucasian town of Kentfield, California, is the Siebel-Newsom clan's first private dwelling since the city's favorite hair model sold his Ashbury Heights home back in June to move in with the in-laws. Kentfield is just a stone's throw from the grandparents in Ross, and after rolling up the driveway of their recently purchased abode, the Siebel-Newsoms reportedly gushed, "Wow, this is it."
SFist Digests: Chez Panisse-Inspired Fashion, A Gavin-esque Brasserie, John's Ocean Beach
A handy roundup of notable food news, including: fashion inspired by Alice Waters' vegetables, first looks at a Union Square crudo bar/gift shop, John's Ocean Beach in danger of closing and the always important hamburger news.
Gavin Newsom Will Save State Economy
Seeing as how Gavin Newsom fixed the city's lackluster job market and disabled budget during his tenure as San Francisco mayor, it should come as no surprise that the budding lieutenant governor plans on giving our state economy a much-needed antidote. Newsom will head to San Jose today to reveal intricate plans on saving California's financial crisis. How's he going to do it, you ask? With green industry jobs and gadget-making, of course. San Jose Mercury News explains:
Photos: Obama Honors SF Giants at White House
President Barack Obama feted the San Francisco Giants at the White House today for their 2010 World Series win. (We can only hope/predict we'll write a similar sentence one year from now!) Mayor Ed Lee, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, Willie Mays, Tim Lincecum, Brian Wilson (sans spandex tuxedo, sadly), and all of your other favorite Giants showed up for the honor.
Buy Newsom's Masonic House for $2,738,000
After Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom used San Francisco to get to Sacramento, he has since ditched us for highfalutin Ross. (Yes, technically he is still a resident of Baghdad by the Bay, but...come on.) His Ashbury Heights home is now on the market, and you can buy it a little over a couple million, reports SF Weekly.
Meanwhile, in the Richmond: Gavin Newsom Rides a Skateboard
Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom was out at Rochambeau Playground in the Richmond District this afternoon to accept a $250,000 donation to the San Francisco Rec & Parks Department from the Coca-Cola Corporation. According to our friends at RichmondSF, the soda company's generous (but somewhat incongruous) donation will be going towards a new trail in Golden Gate Park and sporting equipment for various Rec & Park programs around the city. After a photo op with the comedically large check, the Lite Gov. hopped on a skateboard to wow the crowds with some sick flatland moves. [RichmondSF]
Gavin Newsom Makes an Important Twitter Announcement
Gavin Newsom, an authority when it comes to social media and politics, made an important announcement via that most concise social medium this morning. And the news may come as a surprise:
Data Point: Demographic Breakdown of Ross, CA
"8 Black people who live in Ross" - from the "Home, Swank Home" sidebar item that comes along with yet another reaction to news that Gavin Newsom would be moving up to Marin County. Ross, California's total population is 2,415. [SFEx]
Gavin Newsom Moves to Marin
When we first got wind that former San Francisco Mayor / current Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom moved to Marin, our first thought was, "Oh God, which town?" Everything in Marin, you see, hinges upon which town one dwells. Corte Madera is middle class by Marin standards. Tiburon is new money. Mill Valley is for Beth Spotswood. Novato is the black sheep. Sausalito is for glass beach art. San Rafael is where the county jail is. And Strawberry Village is where one can find a Strawberry shake at In-N-Out. So, where does someone as chiseled and powerful as Newsom call home? According to Matier & Ross, Newsom and his clan have moved to the city of Ross.
Overall Homeless Count Doesn't Change Dramatically, But Huge Spike In Bayview
San Francisco's biennial census of the homeless population gets released today, and the numbers are predictably depressing. Though the overall number of homeless people went down by a paltry 60 (from 6,514 in 2009 to 6,455 in 2011), the number of single homeless people (those without families) shot up 48%, from from 1,269 in 2009 to 1,882 in 2011.
Gavin Newsom Banging Out a Book on Social Media in Politics
Word is out that Lieutenant Governor, former Mayor and adept twitter abbreviator Gavin Newsom just signed a deal with Penguin Books to pen a book about "the intersection of social media and government." Naturally, Gavin broke the news on his twitter account:
A Spaceship Lands at SFO with Gavin Newsom Flying Wingman
Sure this video from Wired of Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo flying over San Francisco yesterday, carrying SpaceShipOne Two underwing is basically a commercial for Virgin Galactic and we should be scolded for posting such blatant marketing materials (Spoiler alert: inspired-looking Richard Branson at 0:45), but also: It's a commercial for a spaceship. Let that sink in for a moment. In a year or so, regular people are going to buy plane tickets and go in to space for awhile. As if they were just hopping a flight to New York. Katy Perry's going. Her dopey husband is going too, that slob has probably been dreaming of going in to space since he was a little kid. Anyway, the WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipOne flew landed at SFO yesterday to celebrate the opening of Virgin's new Terminal 2. But also spaceships.
That's One Cold Game of Cityville
"[Zynga] let us know there is no way in the world that they can go public and pay payroll tax on all their employee stock options. They mostly just dropped that in our laps and suggested we fix it pronto or watch them drive away south." - An unnamed city official referring to the gaming company's new search for a handout a mere six months after Gavin Newsom got all excited about Zynga's new lease on Townsend Street. Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Gavin Newsom and the Awesome Hair Club on Real Time with Bill Maher
Unfortunately, we can't share all of Gavin Newsom's performance on Real Time with Bill Maher because HBO subscriptions still cost money. So you'll have to deal with this clip from the post-show Over Time Q&A section in which Lite Gov jumps in on the first question to talk about how state budgets are geared towards old people. Then the conversation veers towards knitting sweaters and those kooky kids on The Jersey Shore, because of course it does. Also, everyone's hair is just delightful.
Will No One Give Jerry Brown a Present?
The Chronicle dug in to a 23-page report from the Fair Political Practices Commission that discloses roughly how much money in stocks and holdings our government officials have and shocker: Gavin Newsom is loaded. Jerry Brown, on the other hand, not so much. But enumerating Governor Brown and Lite Gov Gavin's financial holdings is pretty mundane. More exciting than learning Anne Gust Brown owns up to $1 million stock in Jack in the Box is diving in to the part where they have to disclose all the gifts they received from foreign dignitaries and such.
If You're Glue, Gavin's Rubber: Newsom Pledges End of 'R-Word'
Today, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom asked for people to stop using the "r-word" (in vulgar parlors: "retard," "retarded") in conversation and written text. Although we suspect any campaign to end argot has the reverse effect, you can visit www.r-word.org for more details. And, yeah, you shouldn't use such terms. It's mean.
SFist Has A New Neighbor, Gavin Newsom
Founders Den, a "private clubhouse" (see: workspace) for entrepreneurs in SoMa founded by Marissa Mayer's husband, has a new resident, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.
How Was Gavin Newsom's First Week In Sacramento?
Yesterday, the Sunday Chronicle (or maybe just the normal Chronicle? who even gets the paper anymore?) posted an update on Gavin's first week in office. While the lede says he's got a lot to adjust to after leaving City Hall, it doesn't actually sound like more responsibility.
Gavin Newsom Becomes Ambassador to America's Cup
Whatever it is a Lieutenant Governor does in Sacramento must not be as important as the sailboat race in San Francisco because Gavin Newsom has accepted the title of "Ambassador at Large" to the America's Cup. Even though he's already been out and about talking up the race, the official role means he'll be putting his long record of schmoozing to good use while he drums up millions in private donations to ensure the city makes good on all the promises it made in its bid to San Francisco Hall of Fame member Larry Ellison and his Oracle Race Team. (BMW, by the way, recently bowed out as a sponsor to Ellison's team.)
The Inaugural Class of Gavin Newsom's San Francisco Hall of Fame
Well, would you look at that: the Chronicle reports that in a quirky last-minute move before leaving City Hall for Sacramento yesterday, our now-previous mayor established a San Francisco Hall of Fame to recognize noteworthy achievers throughout the city's history. The inaugural class includes 27 members across 9 categories ranging from "Art & Culture" to "Government & Public Service" to "Sports" and includes the usual suspects like Bill Graham, Harvey Milk, Willie Brown, Dianne Feinstein and Willie Mays.
Au Revoir, Newsom!
Well, that's that. Gavin Newsom has left the building. His mommy-I-gotta-go-potty urgency to ditch local politics in favor of a more estimable gig took flight today as he (finally!) left his measly mayoral position and was sworn in as California's new Lieutenant Governor.
Newsom Appoints SFPD Chief Gascon District Attorney
In a surprise move, Gavin Newsom appointed SFPD Police Chief George Gascon to District Attorney on Sunday after Board of Supervisors President David Chiu rejected the left vacant by Attorney General Kamala Harris. According to SF Weekly, who broke the story, "Gascon -- who has a law degree and, for that matter, ran a car dealership, too -- will be taking over an office mired in scandal and with a reputation for underperformance."
Rose Pak Doesn't F@%k Around
“Now you know why they say I play politics like a blood sport.” Chinatown power broker Rose Pak, in the culminating quote of a new Bay Citizen/NYT piece that provides a complete play-by-play of the whole interim mayor kerfuffle -- which was largely orchestrated by her, Willie Brown, and Gavin. The Board meets today for the final vote, and will almost certainly install veteran city bureaucrat Ed Lee in the Mayor's Office.
San Francisco Celebrates America's Cup
Promising to bring an estimated "$1.4 billion in economic benefits and 8,000 jobs to a city facing a $379 million deficit," San Francisco celebrated the America's Cup pick on Wednesday. The Chronicle breathlessly notes: "Members of the America's Cup Event Authority joined city leaders and billionaire software mogul Larry Ellison at City Hall on Wednesday to celebrate the Dec. 31 announcement that San Francisco will host the high-profile regatta in 2013."
We Now Pronounce You Chris and Gavin
"Despite the fact that these men served for years as convenient political antipodes (insofar as we have a spectrum here in San Francisco), perhaps they are not so different. Sure, Daly is suspected of living in Fairfield and Newsom is suspected of living under a hair shield, but both men are loners when it comes to decision making. And Newsom might want to ski Tibet while Daly wants to free Tibet, but they are each thin-skinned and apt to tightly hold grudges."
SF Mayoral Watch: Waiting, Delays, Voting, & Hand-Wringing
Who's going to be the next mayor of San Francisco? That's the question on the minds of literally hundreds of San Franciscans. It's goes something like this: Newsom wants his replacement to be a man on the left. However, other people want his replacement to be men even further on the left. It's a tale that borders on almost-intriguing, folks. Scores of inside-baseball jobs, egos, provincial fame whoring, and "friendships" hang in the balance!
Swearing-In 2011: Jerry Brown, Kamala Harris
Looking to distance himself from the (disgraceful?) Schwarzenegger regime via a more celebrity-free inauguration, Jerry Brown's swearing-in today as the 39th Governor of California will be an appropriately mellow affair. Today's 11 a.m. ceremony will feature minimal pomp and circumstance like free hot dogs, coffee, and a few friends and family. (Side note: thank God we no longer have to search for the correct spelling of Schwarzenegger every single day.) Unlike his previous two terms during the state's halcyon Boogie Nights-esque era, Brown will face a different California.
Newsom and Siebel Expecting Second Child
A second Newsom is on the way, folks. Leah Garchik has the scoop.
