Meanwhile, In Pebble Beach: Matt Cain Wears Argyle Pants

Meanwhile, In Pebble Beach: Matt Cain Wears Argyle Pants

When it comes to the San Francisco Giants, there are fashion statements and then there are fashion statements. While Brian Wilson might be the undisputed king of fratboy costume party antics, it's nice to see a member of the Giants' pitching staff at least attempting to dress like a normal human being who steps out in public once in awhile instead of acting like an insane dictator. Anyhow, here's Matt Cain orange and black argyle pants at the Giants vs. 49ers Charity Shootout at Pebble Beach. A bold fashion statement, to be sure. more ›

Giants Pitching Ace Tim Lincecum Reportedly Well Compensated

Gratuitously coiffed marijuana connoisseur and two-time Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants worth $40.5 million, thus validating the hopes and dreams of little league Mitch Kramers everywhere. Lincecum, who might now be the most well-paid 27 year old in San Francisco, apparently turned down the team's offer of a 5-year, $100 million deal. more ›

Photo: 49ers Drink 'Homo' Milk In Locker Room Circa 1951

Today's Niners gem comes from What's On The 6th Floor, the blog for the San Francisco History Center and Book Arts and Special Collections. And what a collection it is. This week they came across an interesting snapshot of '50s-era 49ers teammates taking a break with an unfortunately-named milk in the locker room after training practice. more ›

Behold: The S.F. Giants Brian Wilson Garden Gnome

Behold: The S.F. Giants Brian Wilson Garden Gnome

We got a glimpse of the minor-league version of this quirky ballpark freebie back in November, but today the San Francisco Giants have revealed their updated, very orange take on the giveaway item. As previously mentioned, the first 20,000 lucky fans through the gates at AT&T Park on May 20th, 2012 will get to take home this bearded tchotchke, which they can then place lovingly in a garden, or on a shelf, or in an overpriced eBay listing. more ›

SFist Gift Guide: 'The Franchise' Season 1 DVD

SFist Gift Guide: 'The Franchise' Season 1 DVD

Since the Giants were pretty disappointing on the field this year, why not get that sunken Giants fan in your life a little something to remind them why they were so smitten with this lovable band of misfits in the first place? Even the darkest, rainiest January days will seem brighter when your DVD collection includes an entire season of Barry Zito doing yoga. Or Barry Zito with a mustache. Or Barry Zito talking about his pink underwear. Or Barry Zito talking about interior decorating. Or Barry Zito talking about anything, really. more ›

Looking Back At 2011: Brian Wilson's Surprise Temper

Looking Back At 2011: Brian Wilson's Surprise Temper

Over the next couple of weeks, were here at SFist will look back at curious stories and (more importantly) photos that made 2011 way boss. (Was it a good year? We think it was a good year. Sure, 2011 was a good year.) One person who stood out in 2011 was dreamy Giants closer Brian Wilson. Whether a side gig, a form-hugging spandex tudexo at the ESPY Awards, dining at Gary Danko, or endorsing Ed Lee for mayor, Wilson was everywhere. But. Did you know that, outside of the hoopla and his many bearded wannabes, Wilson is also a damn fine athlete. Of course you did. But did you know that he has a temper? more ›

S.F. Giants to Give Away 20,000 Brian Wilson Garden Gnomes in 2012

S.F. Giants to Give Away 20,000 Brian Wilson Garden Gnomes in 2012

Behold: the Brian Wilson Garden Gnome (pictured right), just one of the 2012 promotional items offered by the San Francisco Giants to entice local baseball fans and bolster attendance at AT&T Park home games next season. Like the Team Snuggie and Brian Wilson frozen in Carbonite Star Wars fan appreciation day trinket, the garden gnomes are the latest entry in to the team's quirky selection of collectible items and largely useless tchotchkes. Also this season: Sergio Romo, Pablo Sandoval and Madison Bumgarner bobbleheads, Giants superhero capes, gym bags and "Orange Friday Texting Gloves". more ›

Pat Burrell Announces He's Probably Done With Baseball

Pat Burrell Announces He's Probably Done With Baseball

Although the San Francisco Giants managed to hold on to slugger Pat Burrell for an extra year in the wake of the 2010 World Series, the occasional kinkster's injury-laden 2011 season seems to have crippled the future of his baseball career. Speaking to AP reporters this afternoon, Burrell explained, "I have not decided yet, but I don't think I can play anymore. It hurts me to say that." more ›

Should Brian Wilson Ditch His Beard? Absolutely.

Should Brian Wilson Ditch His Beard? Absolutely.

SFGate sports scribe Henry Schulman rises above the fray. In fact, we love his work on The Splash. And so should you. For example, today asks, should noted Giants pitcher Brian Wilson should shave his beard? We say yes. Oh yes. Check it: more ›

Check Out Brian Wilson's Futuristic Kicks

Check Out Brian Wilson's Futuristic Kicks

Because we can never not blog a Brian Wilson fashion statement, here's a shot of the bearded one's footwear spotted in the dugout Friday at Coors Field. The shoes, in case you missed all the hype, are Nike Air MAGs. Children of the 80s and Robert Zemeckis fans might recognize them as strikingly similar to the shoes Marty McFly picked up on a trip to 2015 in Back to the Future: Part II. Although Nike hasn't quite perfected the self-lacing technology from the movie, they do light up with LEDs - making them only slightly more awesome than the bright orange numbers that famously netted Wilson a hefty fine for wearing on the field. more ›

Giants' CEO Bill Neukom Stepping Down

Giants' CEO Bill Neukom Stepping Down

South Bay baseball columnist Mark Purdy reports the news from the Giants front office: "The Giants confirmed Wednesday night what [the San Jose Mercury News] had reported earlier in the day -- that Bill Neukom, the Giants' managing general partner and chief executive officer, will not return in that role for the 2012 season." Larry Baer, the Giants' President and COO will take over Neukom's role starting in 2012, with Neukom himself transitioning from his current role as CEO to Chairman Emeritus starting on January 1st, 2012. more ›

The Giants Announce 2012 Schedule

The Giants Announce 2012 Schedule

The Giants released their tentative schedule for the 2012 baseball season this morning and while we don't want to jinx the tiny spark of hope this current series against the Padres has given us, next season already has something to look forward to. The diehard team travelers will want to go ahead and start booking flights to Arizona for the team's opening day game against the Diamondbacks on Friday, April 6th. The home opener at AT&T Park a week later on April 13th kicks off a three game matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates, followed by another three games against the Phillies. more ›

Watch Pablo Sandoval Talk To His Bat

Watch Pablo Sandoval Talk To His Bat

Because comedic bits and facial hair proved more important this year than making it to the postseason -- yes, that's it, allow the bitterness to warm you like a Red Cross blanket -- the San Francisco Giants unveiled another bit of hilarity during Monday's game against San Diego (7-2). After hitting two home runs, Pablo Sandoval and his bat had a heart to heart in the dugout. We have no idea what he's saying, but we're glad the two maintain such a close relationship. See for yourself: more ›

Newborn Giraffe Meets Brandon Belt [Video]

Newborn Giraffe Meets Brandon Belt [Video]

Today in adorable things and baseball: rookie giraffe Brandon Belt, of the Vallejo Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, made friends with his namesake - Brandon Belt, rookie infielder for the San Francisco Giants. The quadruped Belt was born on August 27th to parents Makali and Nyumekye. Belt and Belt made time for a little bonding during Thursday's rest day for the Giants. The one Belt that is capable of spoken language told the Examiner, “This morning has been one of the best mornings of my life. To have a newborn giraffe named after me, let alone me standing side-by-side him, it’s amazing." more ›

Giants Go Into Freefall; Everything in the World Is Ruined

Giants Go Into Freefall; Everything in the World Is Ruined

All that is good and true seems to have just (just?) slipped through our fingers, folks. You see, the SF Giants continue their plummet into the abyss, possibly falling far away from the safety net known as the playoffs. They blew it in the ninth inning against the Braves on Tuesday, losing 2-1. Worst of all? Loads of injures abound. Bruce Jenkins reports: more ›

Urbane Studies With The Tenderloin Geographic Society, Volume 29: May the Franchise Be With You

Urbane Studies With The Tenderloin Geographic Society, Volume 29: May the Franchise Be With You

After the Giants drew that delightful connection between late summer baseball and the struggles of a small group of rebels fighting to defeat the evil, intergalactic empire, our friends at the Tenderloin Geographic Society have taken that metaphor and knocked it out of the park. Because weren't you curious which Giant would play Chewbacca? more ›

Thomas Keller, NY Giants Shortstop?

Thomas Keller, NY Giants Shortstop?

Instead of concocting the world's best fried chicken (and, let's face it, any kind of food product his hands touch), Thomas Keller could have been chewing spit tobacco and rearranging his crotch in front of thousands of adoring fans. In a recent interview with Foodie Chap, the lauded French Laundry/Ad Hoc chef admits that, if he weren't slaving behind a stove for a living, he would've like to have played shortstop. more ›

Star Wars Day at AT&T Park Will Freeze Brian Wilson in Carbonite

Star Wars Day at AT&T Park Will Freeze Brian Wilson in Carbonite

Look, nerds! The Giants have pulled off what could be one of the greatest promotional tie-ins in baseball history: a limited edition Brian Wilson-frozen-in-carbonite statue. The tchotchke (which features Han Solo on the back side, naturally) will be handed out to those who buy a Star Wars Day Ticket Package to the Sunday, September 4th game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. What else comes in that package, you're wondering? Well, access to a pregame costume party, of course. And after the game, everyone gets to camp out on the field for a special screening of The Empire Strikes Back, which everyone knows is the best one. We recommend you bring plenty of blankets, or you'll be frozen yourself by the end of the night. more ›

Tim Lincecum's Soul Patch: Discuss

Tim Lincecum's Soul Patch: Discuss

A tuft of hair appeared just below Tim Lincecum's lower lip over the weekend. It didn't seem to hamper the young pitcher's throwing arm as he held the Phillies to one run yesterday, but seriously: How are we supposed to feel about this thing? Let's get a closer look: more ›

Watch the Giants Clear the Bench for a Brawl With the Phillies

Watch the Giants Clear the Bench for a Brawl With the Phillies

In case you missed it: In last night's game against the Phillies, Giants Pitcher Ramon Ramirez sent a fastball high and inside where it landed squarely in the back of Philadelphia's Shane Victorino. Of course, the boys from Philly don't take kindly to that sort of shenanigans and quickly cleared the bench for a sixth inning dustup. As far as baseball fights go, this awkward mass of uniforms is pretty good, especially when everyone stands around kind of poking each other while Victorino strolls around fuming. Be sure to watch Eli Whiteside tackle Placido Palanco around the 20 second mark. more ›

With 8-1 Win, SF Giants No Longer Tied for First

With 8-1 Win, SF Giants No Longer Tied for First

Whew, that was quick. After losing five games straight against Arizona, your San Francisco Giants booted the D-Backs out of first place in the NL West via a 8-1 win today at AT&T Park. Today's victory marked and to one of the longest losing streaks of the season. (As we write this, a couple of presumably intoxicated neighbors at SFist HQ sing Journey's "When The Lights Go Down In The City" in celebration. They're also berating Dodgers fans and passersby wearing blue walking along Third Street. Heh.) more ›

In the ongoing Bryan Stow story, new details about LAPD's two suspects Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood have emerged: According to documents released by the LA County DA's office, Sanchez allegedly took part in at least four other assaults on opening day in Chavez Ravine before initiating the violent attack on Bryan Stow and a group of his friends in a parking lot after the game. Meanwhile, in a bizarre twist: Matthew Lee - a friend of Stow's who witnessed the attack firsthand - has died of a food allergy. more ›

Giants Memorabilia Thief Arrested at Walnut Creek Motel 6

After a careless man lost his Hyundai full of Willie McCovey-signed baseball gear outside of a Walnut Creek McDonald's on Monday, authorities in the East Bay tracked down and arrested the caught-on-camera thief yesterday. The suspect, a 33-year-old homeless man, was picked up by Walnut Creek PD at a Motel 6 on Main Street after tipsters recognized him from the fast food restaurant's security footage. more ›

SF Giants Score Carlos Beltran

Noted slugger and outfielder Carlos Beltran will (most likely!) join the San Francisco Giants, the 2010 World Series champions. Car Loaded with Giants Memorabilia Stolen from Walnut Creek McDonald's

Car Loaded with Giants Memorabilia Stolen from Walnut Creek McDonald's

On Monday morning, a man driving a silver Hyundai carrying a cargo of baseball bats and balls signed by San Francisco Giants legend Willie McCovey left the keys in the ignition while he ran in to a Walnut Creek McDonald's restaurant to satisfy his Egg McMuffin fix. The man was only in the California Boulevard franchise location for three minutes (which: good turnaround, Walnut Creek Mickey D's) before he came back outside to see his Hyundai speeding off on to Cypress Street. Luckily, surveillance cameras caught a good look at the suspect (pictured) and police have a pretty solid description: more ›

Photos: Obama Honors SF Giants at White House

President Barack Obama feted the San Francisco Giants at the White House today for their 2010 World Series win. (We can only hope/predict we'll write a similar sentence one year from now!) Mayor Ed Lee, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, Willie Mays, Tim Lincecum, Brian Wilson (sans spandex tuxedo, sadly), and all of your other favorite Giants showed up for the honor. more ›
