  • Tonight Addendum: Dueling Manhattans At Jardinière

Jardinière, Hayes Valley's white-hot spot for perfect food and all-around exquisiteness, is having another one of their local guest bartender series tonight featuring Frommer’s Travel Guides editors. David Lytle (whose photos regularly appear on SFist) will be serving up the rye based The Rytle while newly relocated SF resident Stephen Bassman will mix the bourbon based Manhattan Transfer. Each Manhattans will sell for $9.00 with all proceeds going to Family Builders, a local organization that works to place foster children in permanent loving homes. (Proceeds going to a worthwhile cause? Hippies.)

  • Hot Buns Serving Burgers at 'Street Food Fridays' Tonight

Tamara Palmer at the Feast has word that "McDonalds-style" burgers with their pinkies up will be featured at Street Food Fridays. Behold: "Hot Buns, run by two ladies rumored to have at least one pedigreed restaurant on their collective resumes, will offer McDonalds-style hamburgers made with organic beef and served with pickles, mustard, ketchup, and (we assume) a pleasingly-soft bun at tonight's edition of 'Street Food Fridays' at Fabric8 (3318 22nd St. at Valencia)...

To the Barricades! Labor Protest on Second Street

They haven't started any "Hey hey, Ho ho" chants yet, but a group of protesters from the News Media Guild is staging a lunchtime protest today in front of the Associated Press offices on Second and Folsom. Without AP, you'd be surprised how sparse your favorite news sources would be each day, since everyone from the SF Chronicle to Yahoo to the New York Times relies on this venerable wire service's global coverage. Issues in...

  • BART Would Like You to Avoid Lake Merritt Station This Morning

Bad news for commuters going through Lake Merritt BART station: delays at the station started at about 8:15am during the morning commute. As of about 9:35am the transit agency issued a service advisory recommending riders of all lines going through Lake Merritt find alternate transportation. And now you're totally going to be late for work and you'll have to stay late and when you finally get to tonight's holiday party you'll be all frazzled...

  • Supes Vote to Push Mayoral Succession Process to Next Week

So what happened in City Hall this afternoon? Do we have a Mayor yet? The answer to that question is: No, thanks to a motion from Supervisor Maxwell, seconded by Bevan Dufty, which pushed the selection process to next week's meeting on December 14th. The motion passed 9 votes to 2, with John Avalos and Chris Daly being the "Nays" there. We unfortunately didn't get any of interesting quotes from Daly, but he did...

  • The Giants' Presidential Escort

From near SFist HQ in SoMa comes the first of what is probably many cellphone videos you'll see of the World Series Victory Parade today: the Giants and family members making their way down Third Street to the parade route in the sort of motorcade we haven't seen since the first time President Obama came to town: If you're outside the city and wondering if you can make it in time for the 11am festivities:...

  • Blue Bottle Officially Not Coming to Dolores Park?

Our condolences, coffee lovers. It looks like chances for Blue Bottle Coffee in Dolores Park may have suddenly cooled off. On the back of this tweet from Reyhan Harmanci comes a rumor, unconfirmed by SFist, that the local/national coffee maker won't be operating their coffee cart trailer in the park after all. Let us know if you hear anything else, won't you?...

  • Car Explodes Near Montgomery BART Station

SFist received news that a car exploded on Montgomery Street near the BART Station around Noon today. Check out some video of the billowing black smoke from the scene. At least two very loud and scary booms were heard, and the fire department responded quickly. No other details can be found at the moment. A few SFist commenters were on the scene. Below, another view of the explosive aftermath....

  • So Long, Paper Bags

Do you miss those plastic bags that have been banished from San Francisco? Well, boo hoo! You might soon be getting a rebate for the bags you bring with you to the store! Attractive young Supervisor Ross "Boots" Mirkarimi introduced legislation today that would send paper bags packing after their forlorn plastic cousins require retailers to provide a rebate of ten cents to each customer for each bag the customer has brought and uses...

  • Larry Ellison = Jerry Garcia?

So who would have imagined the scene we stumbled across at the Oracle festival at Moscone Center today. We know the 60s are long past, and since Jerry's departure the search for a "Miracle Ticket" seems to occur more often at pro sports events than a jam band concert, but we were still shocked and awed (or at least amused) to see this scene on Howard Street. Can anyone help out these poor hippies?...

  • Another Underground Fire on Polk Street?

Video footage via SF Appeal We received an alert from the handy AlertSF.org (where were you, Emergency_In_SF?!) that there was another underground fire that occurred several hours ago in the Civic Center area, on Polk Street between Grove and McAllister, which has been closed to traffic. PG&E might need to cut power while authorities investigate. The air reportedly smelled like burned plastic, but there was no visible smoke. A hot dog vendor at Civic Center...
