Beware: Undercover Muni Cops Checking Fares Today

By Brock Keeling on Nov 4, 2009

SFist just received the following bit of information, one you Muni freeloaders should read. A reader, who we'll keep anonymous, tells us that there are "[u]ndercover pigs checking for fares around the city... hundreds of them today."

By "pigs" we assume he means "hard-working police officers." (Tsk, tsk)

Anyway, the above shot was taken at around 1:30 p.m. off the 22 Fillmore. So, make sure you whip out $2 to ride today, folks, or pay the price.

Tip off those fare-jumpers, we wouldn't want Muni to close any of that budget hole!

Amen! Please don't help the fare evaders. I want to be able to sit down on my two dollar bus ride.

Make the channel noisy: announce the same occasionally whether it's happening or not. Chances are if the word gets around a few dozen more people will be buying tickets, cops or no cops.

*Crosses fingers that I am the only person riding the 30/45 through Chinatown reading this*

If SF put an undercover cop on any bus going through North Beach to Union Square, the cop would write enough tickets to cover twice the amount of what SF paid the cop that day.

Completely agree. One of the worse stretches and the fair jumpers always get the open seats.

Also, agree with 'what' up there. Your anonymous asshat reader is really not doing anyone any favors.

Or fare jumpers aren't fair to the rest of us.

undercover pigs

What are the odds that Cypress Hill here is a scrawny white Mission resident from Orinda

Yay! About freaking time they get actual cops to board Muni.

Did they tag their Translink card like they are supposed to?

I saw two cops tag their cards as they got on the N out by Ocean Beach yesterday.

I'll speak for the muni freeloaders when I say who cares? They aren't real cops, they can't search you and make you surrender an ID, it's not a criminal matter anymore but civil, like a parking ticket. I just hide my wallet and make up a name and address when I get caught. Just make sure you budget in an extra 10 minutes in case you get busted.

And for everyone who pays for muni.....SUCKERS!!!

Ummmm... it sounds like this is the SFPD doing the sweeps today, not Muni inspectors. Last time I checked, the Police Department CAN compel anyone to show ID for an infraction, or the freeloader will likely face a free ride in a paddy wagon (to jail).

Never start a post with "Ummmmm" it negates everything that comes after it

Oh, you're just pissed you won't be able to freeload off the rest of us as usual today...

*cue Nelson point-and-laugh*

Ummmm... your point is completely valid and well thought out.

Yeah. I'd love to know how many people walking away from the fare inspecting cops today got a special trip to the attitude adjustment tank at 850 Bryant.

sweetchuck,

if i was too poor to be able to afford muni it's not really something i'd be bragging about

i guess it's an anonymous forum, but still.. wow.. you think we're really impressed by your criminal mastermind??

It's Sweet Charles thank you very much

I saw a similar arrest on that stretch a few weeks ago. At the time I thought it was a guy with a stayaway condition on his probation, but it could have been fare enforcement.

Is there any further evidence for "hundreds of cops" other than Mr. Superfly here?

frickin pigs!

100 police officers are about to do the biggest city-wide muni sting yet. Operation safe Muni goes til 8pm tonight. Better have your passes ready!

Why couldn't they have done this before they raised the fares? I will admit, I am a 21-year-old youth pass carrier because being a full time student means I can't work full time. The expense of buying the $55 adult pass this month will mean I will not be getting groceries this paycheck.

So if you see a blonde, deathly skinny girl in the coming weeks who looks like she should be able to pass for 16, say hi!!

If they are in fact SFPD officers, am I the only one that thinks that there are plenty of better uses and more pressing crimes that the "hundreds" of officers could be focusing on in San Francisco?

Yes, you are the only one who doesn't think Muni could use the occasional police officer riding along.

And by "occasional" do you mean "a hundred uniformed and undercover police officers"?
Glad they are focusing their priorities on the crime wave on MUNI. I am sure there were no other more serious crimes that could have been prevented around the city.
Many more people are killed by MUNI buses than will ever be killed while riding MUNI buses.

So this really sticks in your craw, huh?

A SFPD presence on Muni was long overdue. I will concur that a one-day sting is meaningless if they don't continue with the "occasional" officer on Muni, but I have zero problems with what they did yesterday.

Muni needs to be cleaned up. I'm glad to receive the benefit of your extensive experience as police chief in second-guessing the strategies used.

Your welcome. Finally I get some recognition.
I am sure that there will be no fare evaders on MUNI from this day forward! I am certain it will work just like the crackdown on people living in GG Park. That seemed to totally fix that problem.

That kid who just got stabbed on the 49 might beg to differ....

It's definitely SFPD. 2 uniformed officers got on at Geary and Divisadero tonight and pulled a few people off to give them tickets.

Huh, busting fare cheats. I wonder what these cops think of their new chief.

How about: "Thanks for the soft overtime assignment, Chief!"

Point made.

Gavin's in Hawaii, Leatherface Fong is out and a new police chief is slowly making his presence felt.

Shit is actually getting done?

If this new chief can rally the troops and clean up this city, I'm buying lunch for everyone on the SFPD.

This I can get used to.

a canny gambit, rob! all they have to do for the free lunch is to "clean up the city."

Cancel the return flight!

Why tip off fare cheaters? Would you tip off vandals, taggers & crack dealers?

Yes, Yes, No. We've been over this before.

If you think that fare evasion is a victim-less crime, you are an idiot and should be exiled from the city.
