Oh oh. Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums owes the IRS in back taxes. Lots and lots of back taxes.

According to CBS 5, "Alameda County records show the IRS has placed a lien on the couple's property that claims they failed to pay $239,000 in federal income taxes from 2005 to 2007." The lien, it seems, was filed Oct. 14.

"We owe taxes," the Dellums tell the Oakland Tribune. "The issue is being dealt with, and there is a plan that we have laid out, and it will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible. Period."

Dellums earns somewhere around $184,000 a year as mayor.

How does a politician, someone who's supposed to understand how public services work, somehow forget/not manage to pay their taxes? Such stellar leadership!

i would imagine that its ironically b/c he's a politician.

Politicians typically have people looking after their money to ensure that they don't benefit directly from decisions they make.

those people are always trying to save you money, and so will test the IRS' definition of taxable and so forth... sometimes their lawyers win and sometimes the IRS wins... when the IRS wins they get their money. The IRS always gets its money.

this is why this happens to politicians all the time. remember how many obama appointees had tax issues?

there are likely some penalties in there as well.

bullshit band-aid plan to pay back taxes

sigh, those html tags get me every time. instead of a clever "greater than" joke, i should have just said it would have been better to pay one's taxes in the first place. thank you sfist comment board for giving me the inspiration to be more thoughtful in my jokeage.

I wish I had to pay $239K of federal income tax for 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Assuming it means %30 of their income, we are talking about 260k / 280k annually.

Doesn't he look like Morgan Freeman?
